The main gallery of Altos de Chavón invites you all to the opening of the Altos de Chavón Cultural Center Foundation program “Artist in Residence, Fall 2016” on Thursday, November 17th with artists Luis Valverde and Gustavo Fermin. The “Artists in Residence” program aims to foster an educational and cultural exchange between Dominican and foreign artists, who will live and work in Altos de Chavón for three months. During this time they interact with their Dominican counterparts, exchanging experiences and ideas in different disciplines. This dynamic exchange has been able to introduce changes in their traditional way of working the materials and how they apply various techniques in the different art forms. The artists are able to work on their projects in their own space, and at the end of their stay they participate in a collective exhibition at La Galería.
Luis Valverde graduated from Chavón School of Design from the technical career of Communications Design and completed his studies in Argentina in the areas of Stop Motion, Motion Graphics and Video manipulation in real time or vjing. Since 2014 he is Co-Director of the Department of Visual Communication at The School of Design.
His work is an exploration of a medium he wants to deepen his knowledge of; serigraphy, silk screen printing. Basing his work on the combination of simple shapes like the triangle, the square and the circle to create more complex elements. The representation of light and shadow are very important factors in this search since they allow you to create a three-dimensional space with a two-dimensional medium and allows you to create forms that are of great impact and interest to the viewer.
Gustavo Fermín also graduated from Chavon The School of Design from the technical career of Fine Arts and then transferred to Parsons School for Design to continue his degree. For 6 years he collaborated with the recognized American photographer, Peter Beard, from conceptualization, technique development and art production for projects. Since 2014 he has been a member of the audiovisual group ” Les Gens Normaux ”.
During his stay in Chavón, as an artist in residence, he has developed a new body of work surrounding issues such as value, currency and agents of change, highlighting how they permeate every aspect of society.
