With Mother’s Day celebrated in the Dominican Republic this Sunday the 29th, we are getting ready to shower our mothers with love in and around Casa. Whether you get her a special gift from Everett Designs or treat her to dinner at Restaurante da Lucas, the important thing is to express to her why she is special to you. We asked a few friends to let us know why their moms are special to them and we are so excited to share with you what they said.

But first, and given that many countries celebrate Mother’s Day on a different day, let’s fill you in on how it all started in the Dominican Republic:

Back in 1926, under the government of General Horacio Vásquez, Doña Trina de Moya, his wife, and Ercilia Pepín, an outstanding teacher of Santiago, started promoting this celebration. In Santiago de los Caballeros the first Committee Pro – Mother’s Day was established and since then by law number 370 of 1926, the last Sunday of May was designated to honor and celebrate mothers.

Since then, we celebrate this day to that special person in our lives who with selflessness dedicates her life, even when we are adults, to guiding and caring for us. So here’s our Mother’s Day special featuring what we learned from asking our Casa de Campo friends what makes their mom’s special:

I will start by sharing why my mom is special. We may not always see eye to eye on everything, and we may disagree, but I wouldn’t trade my mother for anyone. She has always supported me through my ups and downs, and when I lived in Santiago she was the first person to call me and we’d talk about everything and anything. So many things to say about her…You can ask anyone here in Chavón and they will say the same– she always has a smile on her face and is willing to help. She’s takes care of my siblings and me, three in all, well four if we include my son, and is always looking out for our best interests. I might not tell her this as often as I should, but I love you and appreciate everything you do for Marcus and I.

My mom is special in so many ways. She is an example of integrity and professionalism in everything that she does. She’s an exceptional woman with moral values that are hardly found nowadays in the world we live in; she is incapable of accepting wrong doing, something which she has always instilled in me from a very young age.

Every day I think of her and I am forever grateful in her teaching me to do everything with love and affection, which I try to apply in all that I do and all the challenges that I’ve had along the way. It has resulted in great satisfaction and happiness. My mom is always there for me!

My mother is my rock because she has nothing but love for me and everyone around her. She is the most selfless and non-judgmental person I know and her ability to accept those around her for who they are is truly admirable. She’s an angel and I am proud to call her my mom.

I can imagine it’s not easy raising four kids and the craziness of it all can surely turn anyone a bit coo-koo. Why is my mom special? Because despite the fact that my siblings and I were (and can still be!) a handful, she has managed to keep it together and stay classy! Mind you, you have to be slightly insane to wheelie yourself in a tricycle-type scooter over 4 days through an 18 hole golf course WITH A CAST ON just to watch your son play golf, but that’s the type of thing my mom does for us… purely out of love. So slightly crazy or not, we love her to the moon and back and that’s why Mama Campos is special and the best mom ever.

Being a wonderful mother is probably the single most important contribution a woman can make to our world.  I am lucky to be able to say I have one – a truly wonderful mother.  My luck does not stop there, as I also have the privilege to say I have an equally amazing grandmother.  So as we stand, four generations of women from 14 to 101 years of age, I am grateful for my mother and her mother, for the endless supply of love, support and wisdom they provide my girls and I.

There are too many things that make my mom so special! She’s always there for me just as she’s there for anyone who needs her help. She is one of the most happy and optimistic person I’ve ever known and LOVES to spread her happiness around, it is really contagious! Even her flaws make her special because without them she wouldn’t be the awesome person she is today. She inspires me and everyone around her to be happy, kind and to live life at its fullest and I am honoured and proud to call her my Mom.
