Altos de Chavon is the most amazing place in the world. There is no other place in the world like this beautiful hand-made contemporary village placed on cliffs above the Chavon River. The view of the river below extends as far as the eye can see into tropical forests, and farther, to mountains in the distance. As you look at the far horizon the sky brings the sight back again to the clouds floating by at eye level near the plaza of Altos de Chavon. Just standing in the plaza looking out at the view and listening to the soft Merengue music drifting out from the apartments above the shops is really a transcendental experience.
Los Altos is a world unto itself, especially good for artists, designers, writers and poets. There is a stairway which leads down to the banks of the Chavon River. Three hundred and fifty-something stairs; great exercise as well as an adventure. On the way back from the walk down to the river, the Altos pool awaits you for a cool swim.
At night, there would often be events in the plaza, when the Merengue music would be louder and couples danced together in a romantic atmosphere, which seemed to bring the stars in the sky down to surround Altos de Chavon. On the evenings when there were no events, there was Papa Jacks bar for beer, margaritas, and conversation. For dinner there were the restaurants El Sombrero, La Piazzetta, and Casa del Rio.
