Today, Friday the 8th of March 2013, International Women’s Day is celebrated across the world with tha aim of remembering the great “battles” fought by many strong women who through different periods of time in our global history, defended their position, value and made themselves (and women in general) respected in society.

Although officially there’s only one day to celebrate women in different parts of the world, the reality is that at all times, there are a series of events and efforts made to contribute to the progress and development of society; marches and educational activities to create awareness of violence against civil rights and specifically against women.

It is for this reason that earlier this year, during the month of January, the Regional Archaeological Museum of Altos de Chavon, held a series of activities to honor and study the Hermanas Mirabal (Mirabal sisters), who fought against  the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo held from 1930 to 1961 in the Dominican Republic.

With this in mind, the beautiful ladies of Casa de Campo, whom we also celebrate today, recently made a trip to the town of Salcedo in the North of the Dominican Republic, along with the Regional Archaeological Museum of Altos de Chavon to learn more about the history of the Sisters Mirabal. They visited their home, where their essence is still untouched through their photos, clothes, gardens and customs – a property which has now been converted into a radiant and much-visited National museum, kept by Dedé Mirabal, the only survivor of the four sisters – the others; Minerva, Maria Teresa and Patria were killed in their struggle against the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo.

Happy International Womens Day!
