placido domingo santo domingoOn Sunday December the 4th, Melba Grullon, founder and president of the ‘Fundación Sur Futuro’ hosted a VIP champagne cocktail with Maestro Placido Domingo, immeadiatley following his concert “Lo mejor de mi alma latino“, held to commemorate the foundation’s 10th anniversary.  The world famous Spanish tenor, Placido Domingo, who has been a supporter of the Fundación Sur Futuro since 2003, led the sensational operatic performance “Lo Mejor de mi Alma Latina” (the best of my latin soul) at the Eduardo Brito Nacional Theater in Santo Domingo. The event which not only marked the 10th anniversary of Melba Grullón’s, non-profit organisation, Fundación Sur Futuro, but also raised much needed funds to continue working towards it’s mission to to contribute to the economic, social and human development in vulnerable communities, as well as promote and support the sustainable management of natural resources and the environment.

Placido Domingo, who was last seen in the Dominican Republic in 2008 performing at the Altos de Chavón amphitheater, was once again joined by young spanish director Ramón Tebar, directing the Dominican National Symphony Orchestra, who opened the concert with the the uplifting “prelude” to the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet. The concert then continued with alternating performances between Placido Domingo, one of the original 3 tenors, as well as soprano Íride Martínez and mezzosoprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera, two internationally renowned operatic performers.

For the mostly Dominican audience the highlight of the concert came undoubtedly during the encore, when the Maestro Placido Domingo, performed “Por Amor”, the Dominican Republic’s most internationally famous song, written by Rafael Solano, Dominican pianist, singer, songwriter and composer.

For the VIP’s in the audience, the end of the concert did not signify the end of the evening’s entertainment. In a private room, adjoining the dressing rooms of the nights stars, Melba Segura de Grullón, founder and president of the Fundación Sur Futuro welcomed special guests to enjoy a special champagne toast. An sophisticated affair with ladies dressed in floor length gowns joined by men in suits, the admirers of Placido Domingo were delighted to be given the opportunity to share a few words of congratulations with the Spanish Maestro, as he was led around the room by Melba, who played the role of elegant hostess with ease and pride. Placido Domingo in the Dominican Republic Placido Domingo performed in the Dominican Republic for the first time in April 2002 at the Dominican National Theater in Santo Domingo, the second performance took place in January 2004, a concert called “Mi alma latina” at the “Gran Teatro del Cibao” , when he was joined onstage by Peruvian Tania Libertad and the Dominican Nacional Symphonic orchestra directed by Eugene Kohn. In 2008, Placido Domingo returned to the country for a 3rd time to the Altos de Chavón amphitheater, thrilling the audience of the 5,000 seater open air venue with Dominican classics, such as “Por amor” y “Paraíso soñado.Placido Domingo and the Fundación Sur Futuro In 1993, Placido Domingo created a world opera contest, called “Operalia”, with the aim of promoting opera, as well as finding and helping rising operatic stars from around the world. In 2003 and 2007, Placido Domingo brought the “Operalia” project to the Dominican Republic, where he collaborated with the Fundación Sur Futuro on 2 fundraising concerts, a 3rd, planned to take place in 2007, had to be cancelled due to hurricane Olga. Founded by Melba Segura de Grullón, the Fundación Sur Futuro in the Dominican Republic has, for more than a decade worked towards it’s mission to to contribute to the economic, social and human development in vulnerable communities, as well as promote and support the sustainable management of natural resources and the environment.
