Throughout the month of February, the Dominican Republic celebrates CARNAVAL, and this year, the “Carnival de la Marina” now in it’s second year will for the first time ever take place with a full month of CARNAVAL themed events and activities – starting from Saturday the 2nd of February.
The 2nd annual Carnival de la Marina will be celebrated in honor of the Raudy Torres, the most Dominican Republic’s most famous “Robalagallina”. The “Robagallina” is one of the many characters that is typically seen in Dominican Carnaval, and means “Chicken Thief” – in the past, people who were caught stealing chickens were punished – they had chicken feathers stuck to their bodies and forced to walk in public. The character, however is intended to be funny, generally interpreted by a man dressed as a woman, dressed in colorful costumes with huge hips!
