Did you know that March 20th is World Oral Health Day and International Day of Happiness? This coincidence is not surprising, since one of the most obvious manifestations of happiness is a smile.
World Oral Health Day
Organized by the FDI World Dental Federation, this day aims to promote the habits necessary to maintain dental health. “The official theme of the 2021 World Oral Health Day (WOHD) campaign is Be Proud of Your Mouth. This year, we want to inspire change by focusing on the importance of oral health for overall health, because good oral health can help you live a longer, healthier life,” FDI World Dental Federation.
According to the World Health Organization, oral health can be defined as the absence of orofacial pain, mouth or throat cancer, mouth infections and sores, periodontal (gum) diseases, cavities, tooth loss, and other diseases and disorders that limit the ability to bite in the affected person, chew, smile and talk, all while affecting their psychosocial well-being.
Benefits of a good oral health
Today we want to remind you of the benefits of a healthy and beautiful smile, and although we have had a long time hiding our smiles behind a mask, there is no reason to neglect it.
Numerous studies have shown the influence of a beautiful smile on people’s self-esteem and also on social relationships. Feeling insecure about the appearance of our mouth makes us avoid smiling or trying to hide the smile, one of the most obvious manifestations of happiness. Good oral health helps improve the aesthetics of the smile by gaining confidence and smiling openly and more frequently.
When we talk about oral health we mean something that goes beyond daily dental hygiene activities. Did you know that 90% of the world’s population, at some point in their life, will suffer from some type of oral pathology? The severity of these pathologies is very diverse and can range from small tooth decay to oral cancer.
The most common conditions are:
Cavities
Bruxism
Periodontal diseases
Bad breath (Halitosis)
The good news is that most of these diseases can be avoided through preventive dental plans and proper dental hygiene habits. Going to the dentist regularly is also one of the best ways to take to avoid these oral pathologies. An annual checkup with your dentist can help detect possible problems at an early stage and find a solution as quickly as possible. In addition, dental prophylaxis should be performed on a regular basis, and thus avoid possible cavities and gum problems, among others.
