Every year the Hogar del Niño hosts a “Homes and Gardens Tour” as part of their annual fundraising weekend – and this year with the inclusion of some of Casa de Campo’s most magnificent villas it is a “must-do” event.
Included on the tour for the first time is “Casa Favorita” (pictured above) the incredible Casa de Campo villa of Dominique Bluhdorn, which located in Casa de Campo’s oldest neighbourhood Punta Aguila boasts a traditional Casa de Campo style with wooden architecture, a private beach and spectacular gazebo floating at the end of a pier. Dominique, a great supporter of the arts and daughter of Charles Bluhdorn of Gulf + Western Americas, who actually founded Casa de Campo in the late 1960’s, last opened her home for a fundraising evening or “friend-raiser” for the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design – please click here for photos and coverage.
Also included on the tour is “Pía”, a modern villa built rather recently which stands majestic above the Casa de Campo polo fields – and although mostly hidden from view from the outside, what we have glimpsed promises ultra-modern architecture and a breath-taking view of the ocean and Catalina Island.
Another recently completed villa on the tour is Punta Aguila #63, which overlooking the Teeth of the Dog golf course was built in where the old Punta Aguila airport used to stand and was created in the style of a small Spanish village.
The final villa on the tour is Rio Arriba #17, which to be honest is a bit of a mystery to us – but no doubt given it’s location alongside the prestigious Barranca Este neighborhood it will no doubt be very beautiful!
When:Friday February 15th, 2pm – 6pm Where:Casa de Campo Cost:US$50.00
For those who do not wish to do the tour in their own vehicle a bus will be departing from the Casa de Campo hotel – please ask for details when you book.
Last year, the 15th Hogar del Niño Fundraising Weekend took place on Friday and Saturday the 17th and 18th of February – a wonderful celebration which was “conservation themed” (with some breathtaking decorations) and dedicated to the Hogar del Niño’s “Zona Verde”, an informal education pavilion where the children participate in extracurricular activities such as drama and music.
The Hogar del Niño is a children’s daycare and educational center for over 1500 children, located in La Romana town, just outside of Casa de Campo. Children from as young as just a few weeks old up to 18 years old are cared for and educated daily, from as early as 5:30am and staying as late as 7pm.
The organization also provides special schooling to over 75 hearing impaired and blind children, as well as a vocational school where over 235 students receive classes in different areas like: sewing; industrial preparation, installation and electrical maintenance; plumbing and management of computer office programs.
