Los Toros del Este of La Romana yesterday won their first game of the Winter Baseball Tournament, beating “Las Estrellas Orientales” 10-7 at the Francisco Micheli stadium, thus inaugurating the 25-game season in the newly refurbished La Romana stadium.
Los Toros took control of the game in the first inning, with Ricardo Nanita hitting a RBI single and sacrifice fly by Willis Otañez to produce three runs.
They returned to the attack in the second with consecutive singles by Angelis Nina, Cesar Puello, Jose Ramirez and Eugenio Velez, to increase the board to five turns. Las Estrellas reacted in the sixth inning, with hits from Vince Belnome, Alfredo Marte, Juan Diaz, Leandro Castro and Anna Dean, who produced six runs and incidentally took control of the match.
The La Romana team reacted in the sixth and tied it to six runs, thanks to hits from Nina, Angelis and Eugenio Velez. The “petromacorisanos” manufactured another run in the seventh, to take back control of the game.
But Los Toros mounted another attack in the seventh with two runs to re-take control of the game, thanks to hits from Donell Linares and Cesar Puello.
In the eighth, the home club team produced two runs to score 10 in the game.
As the first game of the season at the Francisco Micheli stadium, fans were treated to a grand inauguration ceremony – with fireworks, the exchanging of flowers between the madrinas (godmothers) of each team, as well as a very special recognition for Frank Micheli, former president of the Los Toros del Este – who led the team to victory in 2011.
