On Tuesday, March 10th, the Latin Baseball Hall of Fame offered a mass in memory of Orestes “Minnie” Miñoso, who was inducted in the class of 2010. The ceremony was held in the Santa Rosa de Lima church in the city of La Romana.
Emotional words were expressed alongside the statue of Don Minnie by personalities of La Romana who attended the event. Don Roberto Weill, founder and chairman of the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame showed in his speech the close friendship between him and Minnie. “For me, Orestes was more than a ballplayer, he was a friend; As a child I admired him and feared when he played against my team. His heart was bigger than his extreme baseball ability. Orestes was a sweet man; I will miss him dearly!“

In life, Don Orestes “Minnie” Miñoso said that having been inducted into the Latin Baseball Hall of Fame, in a country that he loved, the Dominican Republic, was cause for great joy in his career, to be surrounded by his latino brothers, which he spearheaded with the highest level of excellence.

Orestes “Minnie” Minoso was characterized as a humble man who never forgot his roots; I am incredibly lucky, in my childhood my family had to cut sugar cane and clean floors and still didn’t have $50 pesos to buy a shirt. I thank the sport. Baseball has been very very good for me and I thank all the fans. Baseball gave me the opportunity to be the happiest man in the world.” Said Orestes “Minnie” Minoso when asked about his origins in baseball.
Don Minnie… the baseball world, your family and friends will always remember you as one of the greatest!
