The Gallery in Altos de Chavón announces the opening of the exhibition “Artists in Residence, Fall 2017,” a program of the Fundación Centro Cultural Altos de Chavón with the artists, Tomás Pichardo and Lisa Iglesias on November 16th.

The program “Artists in Residence” aims to promote educational and cultural exchange between Dominican and foreign artists who live and work in Altos de Chavón for three months, and concludes with an exhibition at The Gallery. The artists also often teach workshops to the school students where they are able to interact with them and exchange cultural experiences, ultimately learning from each other.

Tomás Pichardo is a Dominican artist who uses different media to tell a story. He graduated from Fine Arts / Illustration and Digital Design from the Altos de Chavón School of Design. He later went to Parsons, NY and studied Animation. After various years working in Animation in New York and Buenos Aires he was accepted into the prestigious design center Fabrica in Treviso, Italy, which has a highly competitive study and work program, founded by Benetton in 1994. There, he has worked on big projects for Bennetton, the United Nations, TED-Talks , Pictoplasma, The School of Life and more. This is his second time as an Artist in Residence, the first time fell back in 2015 and we are so excited to see what he will be exhibiting this time. Video above from the artist’s website,

Lisa Iglesias was born and raised in Queens, New York, and received her BA from Binghamton University in 2001 and attended the University of Florida for an MFA in 2006. She has attended residencies such as the Santa Fe Art Institute, the Blue Mountain Center, Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris) through LMCC, 6_a Inc (Tasmania), the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, among others. She often uses drawing as a lens through which to process the world. Through individual and collaborative works, Lisa Iglesias’s goal is for the viewer to consider both various forms of time as well as the act of collaboration – whether with another person, gravity, architectural space or material.

The “Artists in Residence, Fall 2017” exhibition will officially open on November 16th at 7:30 pm, we are all invited to view the exhibition as well as enjoy complimentary cocktails along with the opportunity to meet fellow art aficionados and the artists themselves. Save the date!
