johnnie walker whiskeyThis Monday the 21st of November, Johnnie Walker, the most widely distributed blended Scotch brand in the world came to Casa de Campo and hosted a tasting with the brand’s global ambassador Tom Jones, an event organized by United Brands.  The evening, which was hosted in Casa de Campo’s Cacique Conference Centre, began with the formal “tasting” part of the evening, in the Cacique’s largest room, which had been especially prepared with rows of tables and chairs – and Johnnie Walker scotch for tasting!

Tom Jones, the Johnnie Walker Global Ambassador led the tasting  johnnie walker whiskey

With the aim of teaching his audience about Johnnie Walker’s “perfect blend”, Tom Jones led us through the surprisingly interesting (yes really) history of the famous Johnnie Walker blend – which was invented by John (Johnnie) Walker in Scotland in the 1800’s when the 14 year old farmer’s son set up his own grocery store and started to blend whiskies to ensure their quality…..and with that first small step, Johnnie Walker not only invented “blended whiskies”, but he also created the famous Johnnie Walker blend. The following is the video we watched at the beginning of the tasting – about the history of Johnnie Walker: (I’m not a huge fan of videos, but this one is definitely worth watching….trust me – take a look!) Following our history lesson, Tom Jones then went on to explain how whiskey is made, as well as how it is blended, how it is stored and many other interesting facts (yes really!!) johnnie walker whiskeyOf course the best part of the evening was actually tasting the Johnnie Walker whiskey – and after learning so much about this Whiskey’s heritage, even I (sorry I’m not a big whiskey fan) was keen to taste it! And do you know what? I actually ended up quiet liking it! Tom Jones led us through the tasting with such skill and taught us to drink, taste and appreciate the flavors, that I am sure even the biggest and most knowledgable whiskey drinker would have learnt something.

Congratulations Tom Jones – I applaud you, that was the best tasting I have ever attended! Excellent job, we look forward to having you back in Casa de Campo again soon (remember how much nicer the weather is here than in Scotland!) The following photos were contributed by United Brands: And the following photos were taken by myself, Rebecca Hughes: [nggallery id=1056] FUN FACT: Thanks to a rather hilarious question from local La Romana business owner, Carlitos Pichado we learnt that a bottle of Johnnie Walker is sold every 20 seconds in the Dominican Republic alone! That’s a LOT of whiskey! Bottoms up!
