*This event has been canceled due to a rain forecast* Forty years ago, the emblematic artist Frank Sinatra inaugurated the Altos de Chavón Amphitheater with an unforgettable concert on August 20, 1982. After this milestone, other stars walked the stage leaving their mark, such as Juan Luis Guerra, Shakira, Sting, Elton John, among many others. This year Altos de Chavón and Casa de Campo have prepared many surprises and activities to celebrate 40 years of our Amphitheater!
The celebration will begin with “Jazz on the Rocks”, a night of retro jazz on the cobbles of Altos de Chavón!
Retro Jazz is a Dominican musical group whose repertoire consists of Dominican songs, as well as interpreted versions of jazz, bossa, latin jazz and funk. Combining the beauty and elegance of the most popular Dominican songs with harmonic depth of jazz, the sensuality of bossa and the energy and spontaneity of improvisation. The group was formed in 2011, by the renowned Dominican musician Pengbian Sang who embarked on a project whose objective would leave its mark on the jazz scene in the Dominican Republic: to reduce the distance between the great public of popular music and the select public that loves jazz.
Making use of his extensive musical training and long experience as an arranger, orchestrator, and jazz player, Pengbian along with with an extraordinary group of Dominican musicians and with the expressive voice of Nairoby Duarte as the protagonist, manages to combine the beauty and elegance of the most popular Dominican songs with the spontaneity of improvisations and the harmonic depth of jazz, in its most important aspects such as they are funk, blues, Latin and Afro-Caribbean music.
Retro Jazz brings us songs that were originally popular merengues, romantic boleros, tasty salsas, and melancholy bachatas, recreated in such a way that, although rhythmically and harmonically they are different from the original versions maintain their melodic richness and the beauty of their lyrics.
