The Perseids are coming! This meteorite shower, which every August passes through our sky, will be even more spectacular this year, for the moon is in it’s growing phase and will hide at midnight, leaving a total darkness that will allow us to enjoy this heavenly spectacle perfectly.
Dating back more than 2000 years, this meteor shower, also known as the “Tears of St. Lawrence” is one of the first recorded in history. The Perseids get their name because most of the particles falling into our atmosphere appear to be coming from the Perseus constellation. In reality though, they are remnants that the Comet “Swift-Tuttle” left behind from its passing through our solar system back in 1992 and leaving us a celestial spectacle with more than 100 meteors visible per hour.

The showers of highest intensity will be seen on the 12th to the 13th of August and it is advisable to watch it from a place with little artificial lighting. This is why the Altos de Chavon Regional Archaeology Museum invites us to join them in watching the shower on the Dye Fore’s driving range on Monday the 12th of August, where away from all the lights of the Casa de Campo resort, one will be able to appreciate the sky show in all its glory – especially since we’ll be getting help from the moon!
The museum will not only be offering information about the magical shower, but will also guide us in how and where to look. It seems to me then, that it’s been “written in the stars”, and we all have an appointment we can’t miss to see the “Tears of St. Lawrence” fall from the heavens. So pack your blankets and get ready for a spectacular (as well as romantic – heads up for the guys!) night under the raining stars.
