I must say, without a doubt, I came to the right place at the right time. My Artist-In-Residence program at Altos de Chavón started and everywhere I looked there was a Hogar del Niño fundraising event going on.
Hungry for more, I took the Hogar del Niño Tour in La Romana. Once I got there, the tour was hosted by 2 students speaking english (learned at Hogar del Niño).
The Hogar del Niño Dental Care Room
First room to visit was the Dental Care, where they take care of, not only their students, but any kid that needs dental treatment in La Romana (around 9,000 children).
The Library at the Hogar del Niño, La Romana
The “Sala Cuna” (Crib Room) at the Hogar del Niño
Hogar del Niño has it’s own pharmacy, library, computer laboratory, crib room, cafeteria (where all children have 3 meals a day), classrooms and my favorite… La Zona Verde (The Green Zone).
Among other things, in La Zona Verde children learn to play music instruments and other art forms, also, to respect the environment and to recycle. (Bravo!)
It’s just simply amazing the work that all of these people, volunteers and employees, do every single day. You can hear love and passion when they talk about what they do.
But above all, Hogar del Niño has this powerful positive energy that blows your mind and makes you want to be part of it.
I think the best way to describe Hogar del Niño is to call it: Hogar, dulce Hogar (Home, Sweet Home).
The Hogar del Niño is a children’s daycare and educational center for over 1500 children, located in La Romana town, just outside of Casa de Campo. Children from as young as just a few weeks old up to 18 years old are cared for and educated daily, from as early as 5:30am and staying as late as 7pm.
The organization also provides special schooling to over 75 hearing impaired and blind children, as well as a vocational school where over 235 students receive classes in different areas like: sewing; industrial preparation, installation and electrical maintenance; plumbing and management of computer office programs.
