Since last July 2020, Clínica de Familia La Romana has been immersed in the development of the project “Comprehensive HIV Support for Key Populations in the Dominican Republic”, funded by the pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences, Inc. This is a American biotechnology company dedicated to research to discover, develop and commercialize drugs to treat diseases such as HIV through antiviral drugs.
The one-year project aimed to improve the enrollment, retention and adherence of users with HIV, as well as increase their participation in mental health consultations, support groups and increase access to community advocacy services. It has benefited 1,250 users of the Family Clinic with timely medical consultations, ensuring timely care, the corresponding follow-up and access to antiretroviral therapy.
The beneficiaries also received psychological consultations to support their mental health, which has resulted in a significant decrease in symptoms of depression in these users. More than 44 sessions of support groups have been held for users and their families, with the participation of 108 people, in order to empower participants, support them with adherence to medications and to educate them on important issues for their own well-being. The community promotion department carried out interventions with 131 users and 31 family members, providing timely home monitoring, thus achieving relevant advice and education not only to the user but also to those who are part of the user’s care. When conducting an assessment of the knowledge of the project beneficiaries, they found that most of them improved their knowledge about HIV, comparing the beginning of the project with the end.
Another achievement of the project was the qualification of 90% of the beneficiaries as adherents or semi-adherents to their medications, which are vital for their well-being and health. Clínica de Familia is extremely grateful to Gilead Sciences, Inc. for funding this project, which has improved the quality of life for many vulnerable people in La Romana and eastern provinces.
