The Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCYT) and the Fundación MIR signed a letter of intent on Friday with the purpose of formalizing a strategic alliance and signing an inter-institutional agreement granting scholarships for graduate students and teaching staff. The document contemplates the authorization to grant technical degrees in higher education and everything that results in the benefit and development of the entity’s students. The letter of intent was signed by the MESCYT minister, Dr. Franklin García Fermín, and the founding president of the Fundación MIR, Lian Fanjul de Azqueta, where the vice president of the entity Lyanne Azqueta Fanjul was a witness, during a ceremony held in the MIR María Auxiliadora Technical Vocational School. Through the agreement, the parties agree to work together in the development of projects that strengthen the academic production of the disciplinary areas corresponding to the Fundación MIR educational centers; Politécnico MIR Esperanza, Politécnico Fundación MIR, and MIR Primary school. “Today is a special day,” said Mrs. Lían Fanjul when welcoming García Fermín. During her speech, Mrs. Lian thanked the MESCYT and highlighted that scholarships that will be awarded will provide a better future for the beneficiaries. García Fermín said he was highly pleased with his visit to the Fundación MIR, where he congratulated its president for her work in favor of the well-being and development of the La Romana youth. He stated that the Fundación MIR is playing a transcendental role in the country, where low-income children have the opportunity to prepare. “Through this agreement we are going to commit, on the basis of merit, to grant scholarships so the beneficiaries are able to continue their education,” he said. Likewise, the official said that students will be able to have access to national and international scholarships. For her part, the general direction of the schools, Monique Acevedo, expressed her excitement at the advancement of quality education provided by the schools. She highlighted the importance of an alliance with the MESCYT since it will benefit the deserving children with limited resources of La Romana. García Fermín, together with Lian Fanjul de Azqueta and Lyanne Azqueta Fanjul, toured the MIR Foundation museum, the dental office, the gastronomy workshop, the MIR Health Clinic, the primary technology classroom, the refrigeration, technology and mechanics workshops. Also in attendance were the vice minister of the MESCYT, Carlos Mendieta; the special advisor Julio Altagracia; the provincial governor, Jacqueline Fernández Brito; the member of the Board of Directors of the Fundación MIR, Sandra Hernández; and the Director of Education of La Romana, Guillermo Núñez.
