With new roads and the continuous improvements being made to make travelling much easier, we can go out and explore the many different entertainment opportunities offered ‘beyond Casa’. The most recent hidden treasure we have found is Friday Jazz Nights in La Azotea of the Hotel Dominican Fiesta in Santo Domingo.
You will arrive and the excellent service will seat you immediately in the place of your preference. In my case before I knew what I was saying I found myself asking for a table near the windows. Finding myself on the 8th floor of this building, which had immense windows with such a view of the city I could not help myself. Not a second has passed when you are being asked for your preference in wine, all the meanwhile the jazz music which was already playing when you arrived has begun to slowly soothe every nerve in your body, entering you into a magical state of relaxation. So you find yourself looking out over a beautiful nocturnal view of Santo Domingo, sipping on your choice of wine or cocktail, enjoying either appetizers or a meal while listening to the ongoing music which for some reason has the ability to speak directly to your soul. Yes, the musicians are that good.
This Friday 30th of May they will be having true New Orleans Jazz with a quartet which includes the excellent Eric Litman on the saxophone, directly from New Orleans, and Gustavo Rodriguez with his phenomenal piano skills. Wavelengths, as the quartet is called, will be performing a variety of pieces including some of their own original ones and some pieces from artists like Richard Elliot, Spyro Gyra and Cannonball Adderley. These graduates from the Grove School of Music in California look to expose us to the less conventional jazz and blues.
It will also be Chivas Night this Friday at the Dominican Fiesta, so apart from jazz you will be able to enjoy of great scotch, raffles and other surprises.
So whether you are in the mood for a calm night, or simply you want calm before the storm and are looking for a place to begin the night before going out to dance around Santo Domingo, the Dominican Fiesta Jazz Nights is something we highly recommend. If you’re into a more bohemian atmosphere they also have Jazz Nights in ‘La Zona Colonial’ on Thursdays – we’ll be bringing you more about that soon.
