“Ferries del Caribe Open Fishing Tournament” – fantastic fishing from the Marina Casa de Campo

From Thursday 29th of March to Saturday 31st of March 2012, the best fishing boats and fishermen from both the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico competed in the 6th Annual “Ferries del Caribe Open Fishing Tournament” at the Marina Casa de Campo to raise money to benefit the “Ferries del Caribe Foundation.” A way of continuing their efforts to provide a better life for many families living on the Dominican-Haitian border, the 6th Annual “Ferries del Caribe Open Fishing Tournament” was celebrated in the Marina Casa de Campo, in which Puerto Rican and Dominican participants competed with much enthusiasm to be crowned champions in the various categories, with boats named “Malcriá”, “Betsy”, “Poly P.”, “Mi Gorda”, among others – receiving great prize money as well as supporting a great cause!

Welcome cocktail at the Casa de Campo Yacht Club

The event started on Thursday March 29th with a welcome cocktail at the Casa de Campo Yacht Club, when the organizers took the opportunity to familiarize the participants and guests with the “Ferries del Caribe Foundation” by showing a video of the village which they are supporting as well as introducing a group of adorable children from a Special Needs School, the foundation also supports.

As well as fishing in the deep seas close-by to the Marina Casa de Campo, the following day a BBQ took place on the dock of the Marina Casa de Campo, which welcomed home the fishermen and on the Saturday the last day of the tournament quiet a crowd gathered at the dock to witness the weighing of the fish.

The final event of the tournament was the official prize-giving, dinner and party celebrated at the Casa de Campo Yacht Club on Saturday evening the 31st of March. Over the last five years, this event has enabled the construction of 199 concrete houses in Batey Isabela, one of the poorest communities in the Dominican Republic, as well as the construction of the first community school, a computer center and a recreational area for all members of these families, and even various health clinics – and this year’s goal is to build new facilities and a specialist home for disabled children who need physical therapies.  With the successful conclusion of yet another tournament, the “Ferries del Caribe Foundation” will now be able to continue to support the growth of this community.
