On December 29, WAO Gallery and Cultural Center unveiled the exhibition “Upcycling by Jacqueline Severino” through a fashion parade on the first floor and adorning the gallery’s second level with a distinct proposal, placing recycled fashion in the spotlight for the evening.

Displaying a diverse array of 95 pieces across the entire room, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the richness of Upcycling. Divided into two sections featuring clothing and art pieces, the showcase is a masterful presentation where garments came to life in a fashion show led by students from Hogar del Niño’s Fashion Design Technical Institute.

With these pieces, artist Jacqueline Severino integrates art and fashion sustainably by repurposing second-hand garments like blouses, jeans, t-shirts, tablecloths, curtains, and more. Her work involves painting, embroidery, dyeing, and creatively applying techniques on various fabrics, imbuing each piece with renewed and unique designs.

Jacqueline Severino’s approach harmonizes sustainability with innovation, showcasing groundbreaking concepts that shape the fashion industry’s future. With “Upcycling by Jacqueline Severino,” the Dominican artist and designer seeks to raise awareness about the vast amount of clothing ending up in landfills due to the unhealthy “use and discard” culture. Her collection is conceived, designed, and developed to contribute a sustainable design to the fashion industry, aiming to support the environment and provoke contemplation among future generations.

The exhibition will remain open until January 29, 2024, welcoming visitors from Wednesday to Saturday, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, and Sundays and Tuesdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. It will be closed on Mondays.

The Patronato Benéfico Oriental, Inc. (PBO) continues championing socially impactful sustainable initiatives promoting culture. This commitment led to the integration of WAO Chavón initiatives, including the WAO Innovation HUB, WAO Gallery and Cultural Center, and the Altos de Chavón Regional Archaeological Museum in Altos de Chavón.

Proceeds from various projects and activities support the social programs of the PBO, allowing the replication of these initiatives in vulnerable communities. This aligns with PBO’s community empowerment programs, promoting respect, solidarity, integrity, and equal opportunities in line with their mission.
