Once again The Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design is pioneering new territory.
Dominicana Moda, the Dominican Fashion Week, is a prestigious annual event in Santo Domingo at which established and emerging designers showcase their fashion ideas. Last year, following the wonderful reception The School’s Fashion Design students received for their senior thesis show at Casa de Campo’s Flamboyán conference center (click here for photos and coverage), Dominicana Moda invited them to reprise their show in Santo Domingo (click here for photos and coverage). That show, based on the rich visual caravan of the Silk Road, was so successful that once again The Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design has been invited to present to the public the work of its recent Fashion graduates.
On Wednesday, October 24th, at 4:30 PM, in the Hotel Embajador, the runway will once again belong to chavoneros, as The Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design’s ferociously talented and remarkably creative class of 2012 showcase their designs in an unprecedented second round.
The theme this year is “The New Resort Wear”, and there will be 30 outfits, designed—and in many cases sewn—by Chavón’s Fashion students. The clothes range from quirky and edgy menswear, all designed by students under the aegis of Chavón graduate and well-known Dominican designer Jose Jhan, to the flowing, diaphanous evening creations for which Julio Marcano, also a Chavón alumnus, served as the special invited consultant.
In addition to those garments is the work overseen by Joel Diaz. Joel, another graduate of The Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design, studied at Parsons and later opened his own business, Jolibe, with his studio in New York City. His clients include Michelle Obama, actress Michelle Williams, and other celebrities on both U.S. coasts. His guidance for Chavón’s student fashion designers has resulted in a body of work that is fresh and polished, tasteful, and surprising.
This year’s fashion show, which will be produced just once, for Dominican Fashion Week in Santo Domingo, promises to continue the legacy of Chavón graduates as fashion-savvy young designers. Like last year’s show, it will be staged and supervised by the internationally recognized stylist Joselo Franjul and Chavón’s Vice-Rector, the multitalented, Venezuelan-born Adolfo Lucero, which guarantees highly professional models and a first-rate presentation.
We hope that all our friends and supporters in the Casa de Campo community will be at the Hotel Embajador on Wednesday, October 24th, for this new take on contemporary resort wear, a knockout student show.
