On Friday, May the 27th, the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design will present its 27th annual student fashion show, in the Salón Flamboyán at Casa de Campo’s conference center. It’s a special night, when Chavón’s Fashion Design students present their work to the public.

This year’s theme is “The Silk Road.” The show is a celebration of West and East, inspired by the ancient routes that meandered from what is now Turkey through the Middle East, Central Asia, Persia, Kashmir, Tibet, Nepal, India, and China. Collages of pattern and stripe, bold colors, and a romantic silhouette are the hallmarks of the collection. As always, the concepts the students develop around the theme will showcase their research and their understanding of contemporary style, with its omnipresent nod to caravans of yore.

The show marks the start of careers that will take these 20 beginning fashion designers far. For the last seven months they have dedicated themselves to their designs, from idea to finished garment. Long nights studying fashion history, striving to develop concepts, and devising patterns and draping were their trial by fire. Now, tempered by their studies, they emerge as designers who can command respect on the runway.

If you’ve attended any of The School’s past shows, you know that they’re entertaining and full of wonderful creative energy. This year’s event will be held at 8:00 PM and will be followed by a reception where you’ll have a chance to meet the student designers.

Your contribution will go a long way toward covering tuition and lodging for some of The School’s talented future designers, students of limited means but unlimited ability.
