At the beginning of April, Fundación MIR carried out its annual Oral Health Outreach with Dr. Hudson, who this year came with a group of volunteer dentists and dental students from Rutgers University of Dentistry in New Jersey, and offered dental services to the pupils of the Fundación MIR schools in La Romana over a period of four days.

Fundación MIR Dental Operative 2017

This is the seventh consecutive year the Fundación MIR brings big smiles and clean teeth to the children of La Romana with Dental Week at La Escuela Campo Nueva Esperanza. Dr. James Hudson first visited in 2009, invited by his patient, Pepe Fanjul and brother to Lian Fanjul de Azqueta, the founder and president of the Fundación MIR.

This dental initiative not only relies on the expertise of a team of trained professionals but also on a wide range of equipment and modern facilities, which were previously arranged in a mobile unit. Now they have the Fundación MIR Dental Clinic to work in that receives students, their families, and employees of the foundation all year long! Thanks to this clinic, lead by Dr. Gisselle Johnson, children can receive dental care year-round. Below is a video during this year’s operative:

Throughout the 4-day operation, the volunteers saw over 600 students and were able to examine the children, fill cavities, perform root canals, extract teeth, apply sealants and perform other necessary procedures in order to boost the dental health of the many children who attend the Fundación MIR schools in La Romana. They also taught the children how to care for their teeth correctly, along with preventive procedures to try to reduce the number of major cases during next year’s visit.
