América Olivo returns to WAO Gallery & Cultural Center on April 26 with her latest exhibition, Sueños que me trajo el rio (Dreams Brought by the River). Olivo’s showcase delves into the profound symbolism of solid waste and its connection to our natural surroundings, urging viewers to reflect on the environmental damage caused by human activity.
In Sueños que me trajo el rio, Olivo shares her personal journey of inspiration drawn from the river itself. “It spoke to me, inspired me, made me dream,” she reflects. “It spoke of its vibrant life, its ever-changing course, its nourishment for people, and its fury when mistreated.” Through her artwork, Olivo vividly portrays the river’s plight, struggle against pollution, and plea for preservation.

The exhibition features a mesmerizing collection of 22 pieces intricately woven from recycled materials, breathing new life and color into discarded plastics. Through these creations, the river, like a muse, whispers to both artist and audience alike, imploring them to cherish, utilize, and protect its waters for a better tomorrow.
A distinguished alumna of Chavón | The School of Design, graduating in 1995 with a focus on fine arts, América Olivo has established herself as a prominent figure in the contemporary art scene of the Dominican Republic. Her accolades include recognition at the XXX National Biennial of Visual Arts, cementing her status as a leading voice in the country’s artistic landscape.
The exhibition will adorn the main hall of WAO Gallery & Cultural Center from April 26 to May 20, welcoming visitors from Tuesday to Saturday between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. WAO Gallery is part of the ongoing commitment of the Patronato Benéfico Oriental, Inc. (PBO) to sustainable social impact endeavors, aiming to promote cultural enrichment within the community.
Proceeds from the exhibition and associated activities will support the PBO’s social programs, which empower vulnerable communities and foster values of respect, solidarity, integrity, and equal opportunity.
