Dominicana Moda is one of those highly anticipated yearly events in the Dominican Republic, and not just for fashionistas; the well-attended shows rally a number of businesses in support and expand the country’s cultural image as a creative force in the global fashion world. Emergent designers remain on the rise, and with noble charitable donations all shows contribute to the country’s economic and social well-being. Dominicana Moda 2017 begins THIS WEDNESDAY and will be held for the first time in one of the oldest areas of the country, La Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo, uniting the event with an authentic element of cultural identity.

Among the number of worthy runway shows to attend, we’re happy to announce the Chavón School of Design’s collection this Thursday, October 19th at 9:30 a.m. in the Fortaleza Ozama. The school’s talent in producing exceptional artists in many fields continuously garners international attention and sustains their reputable affiliation with Parsons in New York. The collection will feature the work of 14 graduates under the theme “Reshaping The Future” which is dedicated to sustainable and environmentally friendly industry practices. The collection “focuses on the use of non-conventional materials, giving a new use to an object and adapting it for a new purpose.” With highly creative designs and thought-processes, incorporated materials extend to odd components like computer parts, plastic tubes, and cables. Each design has a backstory as to why specific materials were chosen and what ethical and environmental causes it supports. The show itself will benefit the school’s scholarship program which enrolls local and international candidates regardless of financial backgrounds.
That same evening at 10:00 p.m. the Jaqueline Then show will benefit the Hogar del Niño, a charity close to many of our hearts here in La Romana. The school under the umbrella non-profit organization of the Patronato Beneficio Oriental, supports the education and well-fare of over 1,500 students, in addition to the over 200 babies they care for in their Crib Room. Already we are preparing to run for the kids in November’s Casa de Campo Corre for the Hogar del Niño. Dominicana Moda is another excellent and enjoyable way to support one of our most dear causes.
