October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month therefore to raise awarness, the Diagnóstica Social and La Clinica de la Familia in La Romana have a special offer on Mammograms, Sonography and Papanicolaou’s (Pap smear) so that everyone can afford to get themselves checked.
The Diagnóstica Social, which can be found inside Central Romana, next to the main Central Romana Hospital/medical center, is offering a mammogram/sonography service everyday for the whole of October, on a ‘first come first served’ basis. It is not possible to phone and book an appointment – you just have to turn up and wait to be seen.
- Mammogram: RD$500
- Sonography: RD$500
And the best part is… insured or not, you do not have to pay the difference!!
But wait, the Clinica de la Familia is also having a special offer for the month of October in order to promote awareness – papanicolaou’s (Pap smear) for only RD$280 (traditional) and RD$900 (with a liquid sample).
Annually more than 2,400 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 1,000 of those women are diagnosed too late to be treated! Mammograms and sonography can detect a potential problem BEFORE you may be able to feel any kind of lump – for only RD$1000, about US$37, wouldn’t you rather be safe than sorry?!
It is recommended that women over 40 years of age have a mammogram every year. Although women under 40 are considered ‘low risk’ and some doctors claim that mammograms do not work on younger women, as the breast tissue in younger women is less dense, younger women can still have these tests to be sure!
