At the end of March, Dr. Hudson, the persoanl dentist of Pepe Fanjul along with 17 volunteer dentists and dental students from the Columbia University in New York, came to offer dental services to the pupils of the Fundación MIR schools in La Romana for 4 days.
The dental operation performed in the front fields of the MIR Esperanza, the boys vocational school, is the fifth mission undertaken by Dr. Hudson in the Dominican Republic, who visited for the first time in 2009 invited by his patient, Pepe Fanjul, the brother of Lian Fanjul de Azqueta, who is the founder and president of the Fundación MIR.
Throughout the 4-day operation the 17 volunteers saw over 500 students, and they were able to examine the children, fill cavities, performed root canals, extract teeth, apply sealants and perform other necessary procedures in order to boast the dental health of the many children who attend the Fundación MIR schools in La Romana.
This dental operation not only relied on the expertise of a team of trained professionals, but also a wide range of equipment and modern facilities, such as a fully equipped mobile unit.
“This is very different from other dental missions as we do not provide mercy care, the dental care these children receive is preventative. The goal is to save their teeth, not to extract as many as possible. It is a major PLUS that the dentists return each year to follow-up on cases from previous years,” Ana Alba told Casa de Campo Living.
Even more good news for the children of Fundación MIR is that they are planning to have a fixed dental clinic up and running by the end of 2015 so the children will receive dental care year-round. The initial funding for the clinic will be given by the Rotary Club of West Palm Beach, Florida and the Rotary Club of La Romana.
A great success for all involved!:
