At the beginning of March, 20 Stonehill College Students, from Easton Massachusetts went on a H.O.P.E (Alternative Spring Break Volunteer program) trip to La Romana, Dominican Republic for a week, where they volunteered at the Hogar del Niño.
Whilst at the Hogar del Niño the students assisted the 3 Stonehill students already there participating in the 10 month extension program, to read about the extension program, click here.
Here one of the volunteers Helen Rodriquez tells us about what they did whilst they were at the Hogar:
We helped paint the new infirmary and psychology office. We also painted murals and bulletins in the main area of the school.
We helped set up a science center in the garden and worked with the children with interactive science games.
We also helped in the day care center feeding and interacting with the babies.
Throughout the day we were also able to talk to the teenagers who attended the school – we played basketball and volleyball against them and they taught us how to dance the merengue!
We also twice visited the Orphanage Orfanato Ninos de Cristo.
We all had a great experience and all want to return!
This is a video-collage created by Helen.
