Last week, Wednesday April 11th, Benetti yachts hosted the opening cocktail party for the 33rd Annual Sugar Tournament inviting players and their guests to the Minitas Beach Club. The oceanside event began right as the sun was setting, creating the perfect backdrop for the evening’s festivities. Arriving to the event, colorful lights lit up the space, and miniature yacht replicas were scattered around the venue for guests to admire, and if interested, inquire about. Delicious hors d’oeuvres circulated, giving guests the option to snack on carpaccio sticks, fried zucchini, mini veggie flatbreads, and chicken skewers, just to name a few. Paired with the circulating munchies, there were three bars set up serving champagne and wine, rum, whiskey, and vodka. Players mingled with old friends, met new ones, and got the chance to size up the competition before hitting the greens. 33 years ago, the Sugar Tournament was just another golf tournament and when Alfy Fanjul won, he donated his winnings to his sister, Lian Fanjul de Azqueta to give to her charity. That very act inspired the Sugar Tournament as we know it today. Since then, the tournament has benefitted the Fundación MIR charity, the organization started by Alfy’s sister in 1990. The Sugar has become a beloved Casa de Campo tradition, calling players and teams from around the world to return each year to compete. The Sugar Tournament is not just about golf, but has grown, and each year there are speciality dinners each night and activities during the day like the Sugar Bazaar for shopping and the Ladies Luncheon and Fashion Show. It has become an event that will carry on as a Casa favorite forever! The cocktail last Wednesday evening was the perfect kick-start to the jam packed weekend. Not only was there good company, incredible food, and plenty of bars to choose from, but there was also live music with a wonderful singer. She even walked around the event as she was singing! It was an unforgettable evening under the stars, alongside the ocean with wonderful people gathered for a good time and for a great cause!
