Next month from the 26th of July to the 9th of August, the Clinica de Familia, a center dedicated to providing medical assistance to women and children with the HIV virus, as well as numerous support programs aimed at the greater La Romana community, is hosting their annual “Camp Hope and Joy”.
This incredible activity gives more than 80 HIV positive children the opportunity to have fun and just be kids in a safe, supportive, and loving environment, where they participate in activities like arts and crafts, sports, community service, singing, drama, and games, all of which help them strengthen their life skills, team spirit, and build their self esteem.
Clínica de Familia La Romana is a nongovernmental organization working to improve the health of families in the Dominican Republic through comprehensive health services, education, and research. Camp Hope and Joy is Clínica de Familia’s annual summer camp for children and adolescents with HIV. The camp welcomes campers from the poorest, most vulnerable families in the Eastern region of the Dominican Republic.
“I love summer camp because it is a lot of fun and I can be with people who are like me. We are all equal. The counselors are there to support and help us see things from a new perspective. The truth is that camp is just as important for our health as medical appointments and medicines…it gives us the emotional support that we need.”
