Another “Chavonero” story! The prestigious Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design, which has been graduating students since 1983, has become the home of many Dominican and foreign artists and designers now widely recognized for their works in the fashion industry, graphic design and the fine arts.

There is no doubt that the School knows how to prepare their students for their future careers in their chosen art area – so it is a great pleasure to present Dulcina Abreu a current resident student on her second year of Fine Arts.

“The school changed the way I view a working discipline.”~ Dulcina Abreu

Dulcina, a graduate from the national school of “Bellas Artes” (Fine Arts) in Santo Domingo, had her heart set on studying at Altos de Chavón. She elaborated such an outstanding portfolio, that she was awarded a full scholarship.

This talented student describes her experience as “feeling, discipline and platform.” And we had the chance to ask her a few simple questions about her own perspective of the School.

@cdcliving: How does the demanding schedule affect you personally?

It’s hard because I miss my family, but at the same time it helps me organize myself, it keeps me focused and connected to my work.

@cdcliving: How is the relationship between the teachers and the students?

After you are done with your first year the relationship definitely becomes more personal, we have the chance to ask for help after class time. They help you out and go with you to the classrooms no matter what time it is. The teachers are “stars” they care not only about your artistic development, but they also care about you as an individual, your personal development, they are excellent and always there for you.

@cdcliving: What is your form of inspiration?

For me, the inspiration I get depends on my mood at that particular moment, how I feel and that definitely reflects in each of my pieces. It also depends on the type of music I want to listen too at that time.
