Torneo Zafra Central Romana

Last Sunday the 22nd of July, the Central Romana Corporation’s “Fin de Zafra” golf Invitational, hosted by the “Cajuiles Golf Club”, was played on Casa de Campo’s Links golf course to celebrate the end of the sugar production season 2012!

By 8am, 62 special guests and members of the Cajuiles Golf Club, directed by Francisco Micheli, President of the La Romana Baseball team “Los Toros”who is also Central Romana’s Vice-President of Public Relations, showed up to enjoy some great golfing on a sunny Sunday morning, with the aim of not only celebrating the end of this years’ succesful milling season, but also the many years of hardwork accomplished by two great members of the Central Romana Corporation; Orlando Deffer, Vice-President of Industrial Operations and Dr. Francis Redman Cabral, Vice-President of Agricultural Research, who after many years service have recently decided to retire.
Orlando Deffer, who was very surprised to be honored in Central Romana’s “Fin de Zafra” golf tournament celebration, and who according to his friends and co-workers is a very sweet, generous and loving gentlemen, shared a brief comment with us: “I’m happy! I’ve worked fore Central Romana for quite a while now… since the 2nd of September 1965 – in times of the Revolution! [The “Guerra de Abril” – a civil war in 1965 in the Dominican Republic.] I’ve worked at Central Romana as the Vice-President of Industrial Operations.”

— Orlando Deffer, Engineer and Vice-President of Industrial Operations at Central Romana Corp.

fin de zafraOn the other hand, Dr. Francis Redman, who was playing along with Harry Magee, headteacher of the Abraham Lincoln School and Rafael & Michael Santana also told us a little bit about his history in Central Romana: “I started working in Central Romana when it used to belong to the South Puerto Rico Sugar Company, the 6th of November 1957. I then left in 1960 since I wanted to do a masters degree at the Louisiana State University. I worked as an Agronomist. We started practising different types of sugarcane and fertilizers and we started a lab in which we analyzed soil and leaf samples. Our job was to investigate the development in terms of a better adapted variety of them on our zone, those which were much sweeter and more resistant to diseases.  I am very honored for this recognition at the Golf Invitational “Fin de Zafra Central Romana 2012”. I thank Mr. Ramón Menéndez, Eduardo Martínez Lima and our friend Carlos Morales Troncoso, as well as Frank Miocheli, President of the Cajuiles Golf Club. Now that I’m retiring after 43 years of working for Central Romana, excluding those years of studies and work at other companies, I will now dedicate time to some personal matters concerning sugarcane cultivation, but most important, I will dedicate time to my best harvest: my wife, 3 children and 6 grandchildren! And some time to play golf as well!!! I must add that Central Romana has a very special place in my heart for many reasons, I’m greatly thankful for EVERYTHING we’ve received from this SUPER company”. – Dr. Francis Redman, Vice-President of Agricultural Research
The golf invitational was played in a “Best Ball in pairs” format, where the winners would be the three pairs with best net scores.  These trophies were awarded during a lunch/prize-giving ceremony celebrated at the Club Caza y Pesca in La Romana. And here are the happy winners:
