On Saturday March 31st 2012, the golfers and guests of the 27th annual Sugar Golf Tournament celebrated the end to yet another very successful event which offered participants not only a great time; 4-days golfing at the “Worlds Leading Golf Resort”, but also raised money for the Fundación MIR charity which runs 3 schools in La Romana.
Following 4 days of golf and 3 nights of cocktails and dinners, the 4th and final celebration of the 27th annual Sugar Open Golf Tournament at the La Romana Country Club was, with the pressure competition behind them, the golfers’ opportunity to relax, drink, dance and be merry!
Arriving at the La Romana Country Club for the dinner-party and prize-giving celebration, guests first encountered the “MIR Bazaar” which filled the clubhouse building with all kinds of temptations for the ladies; jewelry, clothing and even accessories for the home such as the beautiful furniture creations of Rústicos y Más and Elementos.

Head of the Sugar Golf Tournament, Alfy Fanjul gave out the prizes
From the temptations of shopping, the guests then enjoyed cocktails on the terrace and a buffet style dinner surrounding the La Romana Country Club pool, where Alfy Fanjul took the opportunity to once again welcome and thank his guests, whilst also giving out the numerous prizes.

About the Sugar Golf Tournament…
The Sugar Golf Tournament is the Fundación MIR’s original fundraising event, from which Lian Fanjul de Azqueta, Founder and President of the charity got the seed money to open the “Casa de Paz”, which has now become the internationally recognized foundation, today called the “Fundación MIR.”
Originally just a “normal” golf tournament, “The Sugar” was founded in 1984 by Alfy Fanjul and Don Creamer (pictured left), but when Alfy (Lian’s brother) won in 1990 he donated his winnings to Lian, thus transforming the Sugar golf tournament into a charity event for the Fundación MIR, and as such one of the most glamorous, exclusive and important events in the Casa de Campo social calendar.
Today, “The Sugar” now incorporates a golf component headed by Alfy, as well as a shooting componant headed by one of Lian’s other brother’s Pepe, which will be played in Casa de Campo at the the Casa de Campo Shooting Center and “Rancho Peligro” later this year.
The Fundación MIR is a non-profit organization which works to provide education to the children of the greater La Romana area, who are most in need. They run 3 schools; the MIR Esperanza (boys vocational school), the Escuela Tecnica Vocacional Fundación MIR (girls vocational school) and the Primaria MIR (infants school).
