cartier emilia fanjulOn Saturday December the 29th 2012, Casa de Campo’s most glamorous society members, many here to celebrate the holidays in the glorious Dominican sunshine, convened at Casa Grande, the magnificent oceanside estate of the Fanjul family where Emilia and J.Pepe Fanjul hosted the 21st annual Cartier Benefit in aid of both the Fundación MIR and Hogar del Niño.

cartierWith more than 300 elegant attendees this year’s gathering raised a total of more than US$125,000, a sum which will be split evenly between the Fundación MIR and the Hogar del Niño, charities who both strive to provide care and an excellent education for children of the greater La Romana area.

This year the elegant occasion started at 6.30pm, at which time those who arrived promptly were treated to the most magical view of the sunset as the sun melted into the ocean, bathing both the villa and the event in a beautiful pink hue. During the welcome cocktail guests enjoyed an endless stream of champagne and cocktails, whilst they mingled and perused the extensive selection of articles available in both the silent and live auctions.

Whilst the silent auction included items such as a Carolina Herrera Andy Bag, jewellery from Everett Designs in the Marina Casa de Campo and Altos de Chavón and a Mrs. Maria Hackley of New York, boxes of cigars donated by the Tabacalera de Garcia cigar factory in New York, the live auction, once again with auctioneer J.Pepe Fanjul included some larger ticket items, such as a handbag donated by Casa de Campo villa owner and designer, Loro Piano.

— Lian Fanjul de Azqueta, President and Founder of the Fundación MIR

The undoubted golden ticket items of the live auction were 2 luxury lifestyle travel experiences; both put together by Dr. Claudio Silvestri, President and CEO of the Casa de Campo.

“The opportunity to experience an enriching journey in France or Italy, but also the immensely rewarding sentiment of helping to provide for the most unfortunate and defenceless in our community.”

— Emilia Fanjul, elegant hostess of the Cartier Benefit for the last 21 years

Meanwhile the Italian experience auctioned for US$22,000, also with an estimated value in excess of US$35,000 included stays at Italy’s finest establishments; Hotel Principe Di Savoia in Milan, the Villa D’Este on Lake Como, the Hotel Splendido by Orient Express in Portofino, as well as the Villa San Michele also by Orient Express and the Castiglion del Bosco in Tuscany.

Following the auction, dinner guests were invited to pass to the lower terrace area, where a wonderful buffet style dinner was enjoyed under the stars. The evening ended with music and dancing – to popular latino rhythms; Merengue, Bachata and even Salsa.

“The event was a success, thanks to Don Pepe and Doña.Emilia and to Doña Lian and Lyanne for making it a magical night for all of us but mostly thanks for caring for our children so much, the proceeds from the Cartier event has contributed to the development of our early stimulation and education programs at the Hogar del Niño through out the years, making it the only one in the country with the services that we provide.

I believe that only by providing the best quality in education we will break the cycle of extreme poverty that 20% of the Dominican population leaves in. It is great to see the support of hundreds of people from all over the world unite for the same cause  – Children.  I invite you all to get involved by visiting us at and be part of the Change, see you on February 15th for the best Weekend in Casa de Campo the “Hogar del Niño” weekend don’t miss it.”
