On Friday, August 3, was the last day of Camp Hope and Joy 2018, the summer camp for vulnerable children and adolescents with limited resources in the eastern region of the country, organized by the La Romana Family Clinic for fourteen years.
Camp Hope and Joy is a safe and cheerful environment, during which children and adolescents from the pediatric program of the Clínica de Familia receive support, love, affection and respect from a team of adult volunteers, whom they call “aunts and uncles”. Campers perform various activities such as painting, sports, music, drama, games and crafts, whose purpose is to strengthen their skills and confidence in themselves to have a healthy life. Fifty-four campers participated in the camp in Jarabacoa this year, under the slogan “Conquering My Next Goal” and the theme of the Olympics. The closing activity of the camp was a wonderful talent show during which the campers and uncles, dressed in Olympics attire to show which were the best athletes in singing, theater, dance, and all were awarded Olympic medals from the camp in the end.
The faces of the campers become radiant when they begin to talk about their experiences in the camp. With their energy and joy, it is difficult to imagine that they live daily with many precarious conditions and in complex family environments. Upon returning from camp, the campers gave emotional testimonies about how important the camp has been in their lives. One of the campers commented: “This year was incredible, we were able to live a wonderful couple of days, enjoying different Olympics sports, working as a team and being super champions when we reached the finish line.” The camp had not yet finished and they had already expressed their great desire to return next year.
Thanks to the work of the fundraising department and the promotional campaigns, we were able to raise the funds that are required for the completion of the camp. This fills us with satisfaction since each year, little by little, a greater number of people and sponsors, both local and international, support and identify with the celebration of this activity and the importance and necessity of our children and adolescents attending Camp Hope and Joy.
Our gratitude to the following institutions that made the camp possible this year, including: International Women’s Club, Children’s Global Health Fund, Autozama, Fundación Popular, Pricesmart, Bionuclear, Deloitte, Fundación de Valle, Microfundación FGLE, Grupo Ramos, Empresa Los Ángeles, Almacenes Iberia, Asociación Cibao de Ahorros y Préstamos, Mapfre BHD Seguros, Asociación Romana de Ahorros y Préstamos, Dielara, C por A, M.
