Dominican artist América Olivo returned to the WAO Gallery & Cultural Center on April 26, unveiling her latest exhibition, “Sueños que me trajo el rio.” Through 30 intricately crafted pieces, Olivo explores the profound connection between humanity and the environment, particularly focusing on the impact of solid waste on our natural surroundings.

Inspired by the river, Olivo’s artwork invites viewers to reflect on the environmental damage caused by human activity, emphasizing the urgent need for stewardship and preservation. She uses recycled materials to breathe new life into discarded plastics, advocating for greater environmental awareness and action.

The event drew a diverse crowd of family, friends, and fellow artists, all gathering to celebrate Olivo’s artistic vision. Welcoming guests to the event, Sanil Garcia extended warm greetings, setting the stage for an evening of introspection and dialogue. Olivo expressed gratitude to attendees for joining her on this artistic journey, emphasizing the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.

The exhibition will remain open until May 20, inviting visitors to engage with Olivo’s powerful message and support her efforts to promote environmental awareness. There will also be a guided tour on May 17.

WAO Gallery’s commitment to cultural enrichment aligns with the broader mission of the Patronato Benéfico Oriental, Inc. (PBO), which aims to empower vulnerable communities and foster values of respect and solidarity. Proceeds from Olivo’s exhibition will contribute to these endeavors, furthering the impact of art as a catalyst for social change.
