On May 17, 2025, the Altos de Chavón Archaeological Museum welcomed visitors of all ages for a special night of culture and discovery. Held as part of the Noche Larga de los Museos celebration, the event offered a packed program of guided tours, workshops and interactive activities under the stars.

A Journey Through Time

The evening marked the museum’s first major public event under new leadership. In her opening remarks, museum manager Luciana Goldfain welcomed the crowd and shared her enthusiasm for this next chapter. “Noche Larga de los Museos allows us to celebrate and share the rich history and traditions of the Dominican Republic with the wider community,” she said.

Guests then joined a guided tour led by Diógenes Alcalá, whose vivid storytelling transported visitors to the pre-Columbian era. Sounds of ancient maracas, flutes and ritual chants accompanied the tour, immersing guests in the world of the island’s earliest inhabitants.

Workshops for All Ages

Hands-on learning was a highlight of the evening. Local artisans Damar Castaños and José Tiburcio led a clay workshop where visitors shaped their own pieces inspired by Taino art. The museum gardens, now newly renovated, provided a fitting backdrop.

Children took part in a Taino stamp workshop and explored a miniature archaeological dig, uncovering bits of history through play.

Inside the museum’s Taino Room, guests experienced the sounds of nighttime creatures — owls, bats and crickets — while exploring life-sized replicas of bohíos, traditional hammocks, and learning about the areíto ritual.

A Pop-Up Museum Shop and More

Visitors also got a first look at the museum’s new pop-up shop, offering Taino-inspired pieces, postcards, and cultural keepsakes. The shop will become a permanent feature next month. An audio guide is also in the works and will launch later this year.

A Night to Remember

The evening wrapped up with families taking photos with Taino-themed props and guests sharing their clay creations. “We are grateful for everyone’s participation tonight and remain committed to creating inclusive and engaging cultural experiences for our community,” said Goldfain.

Part of a National Celebration

The event was part of a nationwide effort organized by the Ministry of Culture and the General Directorate of Museums. Held from May 16 to 18, 2025, this year’s Noche Larga de los Museos celebrated the theme Ahora por la equidad (Now for Equity), with more than 30 museums across the Dominican Republic offering free access to special programs and activities. The initiative, inspired by Berlin’s first Long Night of Museums in 1997, aims to make culture accessible to all.
