Museo Regional Arqueológico Altos de Chavón

The Altos de Chavón Regional Museum of Archeology is currently closed for renovations, and will remain closed until July 20th.

Located behind the St. Stanislaus church in Altos de Chavón, the Altos de Chavón Regional Museum of Archeology is the place to learn about the rich ancestral heritage of the Dominican Republic and has more than 3,000 Pre-Columbian Taino artefacts.

The renovation of the Altos de Chavón Archeological Museum will focus on the reconstruction of the panels and interpretative signage, since much of it has been affected by termites. At this point only these improvements will be made and the museum design will remain the same, as a complete makeover would prove costly.  And lets be honest, it is pretty cool as it is!

Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Claudio Silvestri, who helped identify corporate sponsors such as Central Romana, Casa de Campo and the Fundación Altos de Chavón, the museum should be open its doors again on July 20th.

Altos de Chavon Archeology Museum

This museum documents the important indigenous heritage of Santo Domingo island (before it was known as Hispaniola, this island was called Santo Domingo). The museum boasts a superb collection of over 3000 pieces found in the region and that have been collected by Samuel Pión over the past 40 years. They display, in chronological order, the evolution of the culture of indigenous societies from the pre-agricultural era to the time of the Tainos, the dominant culture on the island when the Spaniards arrived.
