tarde_de_juegos_dominicanosThe Altos de Chavón Regional Museum of Archaeology held on May, Monday 19th an afternoon of “Traditional Dominican Games” in the gardens of Altos de Chavón. tarde_de_juegos_dominicanos_2It was a fun and educational afternoon in which each child had the opportunity to have fun and at the same time, learn about traditional Dominican games and sweet treats. Among the games played were making paper helicopters, “sun sun de la carabela”, “el pañuelito” and “canicas”, among others. The game of “el sun sun Carabela” is running without turning to look back; while in the game “el pañuelito” two participants race to see which first reaches the handkerchief; and in the game “canicas” each participant must try to hit as many of marbles, which are in a circle. At the end of these activities, the little ones got the chance to taste traditional Dominican sweets, such as: jalao, canquiña, bolitas, y pilones. The candy ‘Jalao’ is made with cocco with a caramel topping, the ‘canquiña’ is a elongated candy flavored milk; while that the ‘pilones’ are made of sugar and are extremely hard; on the other hand, the ‘bolitas’ are a white-colored candy with colored line. The event was held to mark International Museum Day (May, Sunday 18th). The activity was conducted by Yanet Castillo, coordinator of the museum and Lenin Paulino archaeologist and educator.
