fashion week Now in it’s 4th year the Dominicana Moda, fashion event features collections from over 30 Dominican designers such as Hippolito Peña and Jenny Polanco, as well as designers from Barbados, Chile, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Guadalupe, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago The Altos de Chavon School of Design is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and in honor of this, Dominicana Moda created a special section dedicated to the Altos de Chavon School of Design, featuring some of the school’s best ex-students, such as Luis Dominguez, Julio Marcano and Annie Abbate. The ‘face’ for the event was Arlenis Sosa, international Dominican Top Model, ranked 24th top model in the world. Also in attendance was Ada Aime de la Cruz, Miss Dominican Republic, who was a finalist in the ’09 Miss Universe pageant (see photo left.) I had the pleasure of seeing Carlos de Moyas’ who took inspiration from ballerinas and created a stunning collection ‘En Pointe,’ and a mesmerizing catwalk show. The highlight of this show was when one of the models strutted down the runway ON POINT, meaning she modeled whilst wearing traditional ‘point’ ballet shoes. It was amazing! After the show, the audience could visit the designer’s show rooms to see what they had on show; some introduced Dominican history, incorporating the 809 area code and the red, white and blue into thier signature dresses, in fact all the gowns were magnificent with everything from neutral colours to animal prints, in the sexiest of cuts. Dominicana Moda has turned into one of the most eagerly awaited events in the country, if you love fashion and you want to see what your favorite Dominican designers have been up to you cannot miss it!
