On Saturday the 6th of April, the 28th annual Sugar Golf Tournament came to a close with the grand prize-giving ceremony and dinner-dance hosted at the La Romana Country Club in Casa de Campo.
The annual tournament, headed by Alfy Fanjul, President and CEO of the Central Romana Corporation in La Romana was a great success that united more than 400 golfers in their shared love of the game and good times – which with the opportunity to play 4 rounds on Casa de Campo’s world famous courses; Teeth of the Dog, Links, Dye Fore and the La Romana Country Club and enjoy a series of celebrations – a great time was certainly had by all!

Following a day filled with sunshine, great golf, a very successful ladies luncheon and fashion show at the MIR Bazaar, a tennis tournament and even the unveiling of the new Pete Dye statue, the evening dawned and the La Romana Country Club glowed in anticipation of the event. Unfortunately it started to rain, just as the first guests began to arrive! But at least there was plenty of space around the bar for us all to enjoy a Ron Atlantico mojito, champagne or Chivas Regal on the rocks whilst we waited for it to pass – and pass it did – so quickly it was as if the rain was just a dream!
The brief rain shower also offered the lady guests the perfect opportunity or excuse rather to visit the MIR Bazaar one last time, which raising funds for the Fundación MIR was more successful than ever more with more than US$10,000 raised to be used to fund various MIR projects and the day to day running of their 3 schools in La Romana.
The good times continued with more cocktails and the buffet dinner served around the pool.

Once the majority of guests had taken their seats for dinner and were enjoying a delicious variety of meats, pasta and salads, tournament host, Alfy Fanjul began the prize-giving ceremony accompanied by his daughters Crista Ryan and Lillian Fernandez, as well as Lyanne Fanjul de Azqueta.
This was the moment everyone was waiting for – when the winners of this prestigious tournament were presented with their trophies and prize-money! The lady golfers were presented with beautiful jewellery by Everett’s Designs (based in the Marina Casa de Campo and Altos de Chavón) as well as Bibi Leon hand painted plates, both annual supporters of the tournament. The male golfers on the other hand were happy to receive shiny silver trophies.

This year Gilles Gagnon, Casa de Campo Director of Golf for the past 30 years, who has expertly overseen the organization of the tournament from the beginning, presented a very special gift to both Alfy Fanjul and Jamie Niven – a painted copy of the Casa de Campo Sugar Tournament logo – drawn by hand by local La Romana artist Jorge Silvestre, who designed it 27 years ago.
The night ended, as do the best nights in Casa de Campo – with dancing to tropical latin music under the stars!
