After a Boa de la Hispaniola snake was captured in the Marina Casa de Campo (click here to find out more), we have been extra vigilant about looking out for other wildlife lurking around the Casa de Campo resort, and in addition to a huge variety of birds, we recently spotted this snake slithering across the cobbles in Altos de Chavón!
Unlike the infamous Boa de la Hispaniola however, this snake was teeny tiny! A skinny little thing, no wider than my little finger and probably only a little over a foot long we found him sliding down the stairs which lead to the front door of our offices (Silgon Inc., Marketing, Web Development & Publishing Services). Nevertheless as inoffensive as he was, he still did give us a little bit of a fright – yes we did squeal!
Hispaniola Black Racer snake in Altos de Chavón
After disappearing into a crack in the rocks I sent his photo to Jorge Brocca of the Hispaniola Ornithological Society, who identified the snake as a Culebra Sabanera (Hypsirhynchus parvifrons), whose common name is the Hispaniolan Black Racer – and is completely harmless to humans.
As I already mentioned, I have recently begun to notice (and photograph) Casa de Campo’s abundant wildlife, which I was seemingly oblivious to before – so if you are a nature lover you can look forward to reading many more nature and wildlife articles soon! The flora and fauna of Casa de Campo is really rather incredible!
Boa de la Hispaniola?
On August 15th 2012, a 6ft Hispaniola de la Boa snake was captured by dock handlers of the Marina Casa de Campo, adopted by Cecil DeHaas, manager of La Cantina restaurant in Altos de Chavón and eventually taken to the zoo in Santo Domingo.
