Breakfast, it’s the most important and best meal of the day – and so it was such a thrill to discover “La Cuchara de Madera” Pasteleria (cake shop), in Santo Domingo which not only offers a nice breakfast menu (as well as lots of cakes and other goodies) – but is also really delicious!

With its brown and cream decor and eclectic mix of furniture with display cases and racks brimming with a variety of different cakes, cupcakes and cookies, this cake shop feels just like (well almost) a traditional British tea shop. I fell in love with it instantly.

Whilst we perused the menu we ordered 2 capuccinos, which to our surprise came with a little tray of sweet treats – 2 chocolate croissants and 4 mini heart-shaped cookies. Something quiet wonderful to start our meal with and they were so good – especially the croissants, which were crispy, flaky and very generously filled with chocolate.
[I’ve since discovered that the treat is part of a special offer La Cuchara de Madera are currently offering to everyone who orders cappucinos before 9am – in this case the early bird catches the pastries!]

Next we ate our “main” breakfast – Philip had the traditional eggs benedict and I had the huevos rancheros, which although not exactly traditional were very good. As Philip is the real “foody”, I handed over the final judgement of our dishes to his expert assessment, and he said:

I give both a solid 8 (out of 10) or perhaps even a 8.5, the eggs benedict were almost perfect, I would have just liked my muffin toasted a little more.” — Philip Silvestri

I on the other hand thought both dishes were awesome, the eggs benedict sauce was creamy and flavorful; the eggs were cooked perfectly and the ham was good quality. Meanwhile, the huevos rancheros, served atop an “arepa de maiz” was excellent, the sauce had plenty of cilantro (my favourite herb) and just a slight hint of spice. An excellent start to the day!

Next time you’re in Santo Domingo give it a try, and not just for breakfast – they also have a large and very tempting selection of cakes and other “dulces”, I was very tempted to take away some carrot cake, but managed to resist…next time!
