Character Creation taught by Luis Nazario

Character Creation Chavon International Summer

Luis Nazario has over 10 years of experience in graphic design and branding, he has worked with companies like Brugal, Colgate Palmolive, Listin Diario, Basking Robbins, Helados Bon, among others. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Fine Arts and Illustration in Chavón School of Design, and went on to Parson New York where he finished his BFA in Ilustration. He has worked with the New York Times, and developed content for MTV, Tumblr, Viacom, JCPenny’s, Marriott Hotels, Cadillac, H4B Chelsea and Mayday. See more of his work here.

With him, you will learn to bring your designs to life whether they be an animation, graphic novel, game, Web, or print; and by the end of the course, you’ll present a portfolio of designs with an original character and background story incorporating all the tools and knowledge you gained throughout the course. It requires you to have a standing foundation of traditional or digital drawing and color management.

Benjamin Craig has a Masters degree from the New York Academy of Art and a bachelor in Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California. He has participated in the Chubb Fellow and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing China, and has various achievements amongst them the Guggenheim scholarship as well as awards from the Academy of Art Annual Spring Show. Notably, Benjamin has been part of various collective exhibitions in galleries in San Francisco, New York and Beijing.

With a focus on the human form, students work with live models and are taught to capture long and short poses. Students learn to enhance their perception, lineal drawing, aesthetic vocabulary, and use a variety of media including chalk, pencil, ink, acrylics and more.

Katia Rios graduated from the Altos de Chavón School of Design and is a Designer and Fashion Merchandiser. She has studied in the Textile School of the University of North Carolina, and worked as Product and Merchandising Manager for Grupo M Industries with brands such as Marks & Spencer, Hugo Boss, Abercrombie & Fitch, Nordstrom, Ashworth, Callaway, Carters, Hanes, Gap, Nike, Ralph Lauren Kids, Liz Claiborne, and DKNY. She is a textile consultant for the Consejo Nacional de Competitividad (CNC) and the Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID). She was also the Sub Director of Fashion Design here in the La Romana Campus.

Illustration and sketches are not the only way to communicate your ideas in fashion design.  Fashion Technical Design is quick, easy and effective especially when it comes to cutting and sewing. In this workshop, you’ll learn to present your designs with flats and floats and learn all the vocabulary used in fashion, textiles, design and construction. It is perfect for inspiring you to pursue a career in fashion design.

Textile Design taught by Caroll Maura

Textile Design Chavon International Summer

Caroll Maura started her art formation early when she received instruction from the Escuela de Pintura by Maestro Guillo Perez; she later studied with Carlos Montesino who has taught in the Altos de Chavón School of Design. When she was 15, she interned in the atelier of designer Magaly Tiburcio, and later went on to study Fashion in the Giannina Azar School, Mercy Jaquez Technical Institute, and the Altos de Chavón School of Design. She moved to Madrid to the Instituto Europeo di Design (I.E.D) and won the contest “-CO2+DESIGN”. She currently works in Madrid, Spain and Dominican Republic, as a Fashion Designer and Illustrator. The world is in constant movement and there are new innovations every day filled with art, magic and poetry. In this workshop, students will be able to manipulate and design various textiles working with prints and silk screen printing. They will work with a client and product and will be able to get inspiration from the world of fashion, film, architecture and various other art forms.

Urban Sketching taught by Jonathan Schmidt

Urban Sketching Chavon International Summer

Jonathan Schmidt is a Fine Arts and Illustration graduate of the Altos de Chavón School of Design and Parsons School of Design; he received a scholarship to study art and illustration at The Studio School in New York, and participated in the Altos de Chavón Artists in Residence program. He has worked on diverse children’s book projects developed by the Dominican Department of Education and designed and illustrated the cover of the Penguin Young Readers Group, Series 2005–2006. During this workshop, the students will be able to draw static objects and things in movement under any given circumstance. This course helps to broaden one’s horizons with the various techniques that will be taught giving them the ability to work in publicity projects, animation, film, photography, painting, etc. The ability to draw and observe is a necessary tool for this workshop. By the end of the week, students will be able to “think with their hands,” aiding them with in their personal and professional artwork.

Founded in 1983, The Altos de Chavón School of Design offers careers in applied arts in the areas of Fine Arts, Visual Communication and Fashion.
