In August this year, the”Fundación MIR” and “MIR Esperanza” schools celebrated the graduation of 132 students with a graduation ceremony held at the Inmaculado Corazon de Maria School.

Celebrated on the 19th of August 2011, this was only the second year in which MIR Esperanza (the boys shcool) participated in the graduation ceremony,  and 15 out of 22 boys were honored with special mentions due to their outstanding performance throughout the school year, with Julio Alberto Avila Baez recognized as the highest performing student.

The girls’ school, however, had a total of 110 graduates, of which 38 had outstanding grades. The all-girls’ school, which opened in 1992, has 31 teachers, well equipped classrooms, computing laboratories and many other facilities.

Both institutions were created by Fundacion MIR, a charity founded by Lian Fanjul de Azqueta and both provide a series of workshops for the young girls and boys, such as “Electricity”, “Refrigeration”, “Cooking”, “Auto Mechanics”, among others – to provide the youngsters of La Romana with the skills they need to go out and find jobs!
