As we begin a New Year, the year 2012 – let’s take a moment to remember all the best moments and successes of the year 2011! With the Hogar del Niño’s main fundraising effort coming up in just few weeks (click here for more info), here we bring you some great memories of all the good times we’ve shared with the Fundación MIR, as well as the foundation’s numerous successes and achievements over the last year!
The Hogar del Niño – Achievements 2011
The Hogar del Niño is a children’s daycare and educational center for over 1500 children, located in La Romana town, just outside of Casa de Campo. Children from as young as just a few weeks old up to 18 years old are cared for and educated daily, from as early as 5:30am and staying as late as 7pm. Throughout the year (2011) the special facility, celebrated a number of special occasions and achievements:
In August 2011, The ‘Patronato Benéfico Oriental’, the umbrella charity for the Hogar del Niño celebrated their 3rd graduation of 41 pupils. In the graduating class of 41 students, 31 achieved grades of 80% or higher – a success which broke the Hogar del Niño’s previous record of achievement!
In July 2011, the Hogar del Niño re-opened to host a summer camp. The Hogar del Niño Summer Camp, which has now taken place for 2 consecutive year is aimed at the Hogar del Niño’s smallest children – the babies and toddlers, who throughout the summer vacation spend their days at the Hogar del Niño enjoying fun educational activities. Designed to be different from their normal classes, summer camp focusses on educational fun, with lots of singing, games, contests, painting and even karaoke!
On Wednesday the 14th of December 2011, the Hogar del Niño hosted their annual Christmas Party, which was held in their school/day care facility the in La Romana town. Every year at Christmas time the more than 1,000 children cared for at the Hogar del Niño receive one main gift (a doll for girls and a car/truck for boys, for example) as well as a package of cookies, chocolates and sweeties.
Throughout 2011, the Hogar del Niño has laid the ground work for one of their most ambitious projects yet – the “Sport and Cultural Project”, an initiative, which through the construction of a sports stadium, will provide the Hogar del Niño’s students as well as the La Romana community, with a safe place to enjoy both sports and cultural events, already has 50% of the funds needed to begin the first stage of construction!
Every year the Hogar del Niño school and day care centre in La Romana town, near to Casa de Campo is blessed by the arrival of 4 Americans who spend nearly a year volunteering in the school, contributing not only their time and hard work but also endless amounts of love, whilst they carry out life-changing projects and initiatives.
To maintain an excellent level of care and education at the Hogar del Niño, as well as to expand and improve facilities, the Hogar del Niño hosted a series of fundraising events in Casa de Campo:
On Friday and Saturday the 18th and 19th of February 2011, the Hogar del Niño fundraising weekend was celebrated in Casa de Campo with a variety of sporting activities; golf, tennis, cycling, and polo, as well as a tour of the Hogar del Niño, a Home and Gardens tour and a cocktail at the Diagnostica Social.
On Thursday the 24th of February 2011, James Bradley, famous author and motivational speaker took part in a fundraising event at the Casa de Campo villa of Phyllis Berney. During the evening James Bradley gave a passionate and interesting speech about his books and his varied history, following which his books were sold with all profits being donated to the Hogar del Niño’s Scholarship scheme.
On Saturday the 22nd of October 2011, the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design took part in the Dominicana Moda fashion event in Santo Domingo for the very first time! Showcasing fashion show “The Silk Road” (La Ruta de la Seda) created by the school’s 2011 graduating class, the event not only raised money for the Altos de Chavón Foundation and the Hogar del Niño, but was also an excellent display of Dominican fashion by these talented up and coming designers.
On Friday the 25th of November 2011, Casa de Campo villa owners, Mario and Monica Galleto hosted a magical Piano concert by Maria Pia Fazio de Carlo to raise money for the Hogar del Niño’s “Sport and Cultural Project.” Following the wonderful piano performance, the live auction began, which included items that had been kindly donated by Hogar del Niño supporters of the Casa de Campo community.
At the beginning of every month, the ladies of Casa de Campo celebrate the Café de la Leche and gather milk and other supplies for the Hogar del Niño’s crib room.
On Saturday the 26th of November 2011, Casa de Campo’s female villa owners and visitors came together to raise money for the Hogar del Niño – dancing the night away at the Zumbathon Charity event held on the Paseo del Mar in the Marina Casa de Campo.
On Thursday the 29th of December 2011, the Fanjul Family, along with luxury jewelry brand, Cartier celebrated the 20th annual Cartier Benefit, an event which has to date, raised over 2 million dollars for 2 charities; the Fundación MIR and the Hogar del Niño.
Last Tuesday 27th of December 2011, the”Arte Naive” art exhibit and cocktail hosted at the “Jenny Polanco Project” store in aid of the Hogar del Niño, was celebrated in the Marina Casa de Campo, with the attendance and support of many Casa de Campo villa owners, residents and visitors.
The Hogar del Niño is a children’s daycare and educational center for over 1500 children, located in La Romana town, just outside of Casa de Campo. Children from as young as just a few weeks old up to 18 years old are cared for and educated daily, from as early as 5:30am and staying as late as 7pm.
The organization also provides special schooling to over 75 hearing impaired and blind children, as well as a vocational school where over 235 students receive classes in different areas like: sewing; industrial preparation, installation and electrical maintenance; plumbing and management of computer office programs.
