My oh my, Hurricane Irene has become quiet a beast and having brought very heavy rain and some strong winds to the Dominican Republic over night, she looks set to grow and get even stronger!

Hurricane Irene, update Tuesday August 23rd, 11.30am

  • The Centre of Hurricane Irene is currently located approximately 5o miles (85km) north-north west of Puerto Plata on the Northern Coast of the Dominican Republic
  • Hurricane Irene has now developed into a category 2 hurricane and is predicted to become a category 3 and possibly even a category 4 hurricane as she progresses northward towards the United States
  • Hurricane Irene is producing winds of 100 mph (160 km/h) which extend which extend up to 50 miles (85km) from it’s centre – which means the Northern Coast of the Dominican Republic (towns located in the Puerto Plata area) are currently enduring these hurricane force winds, as well as very heavy rain as well as dangerous waves along the coast. There are already reports of many homes in this area being destroyed.
  • Hurricane Irene is producing Tropical Storm Force winds of between 56km/h and 102km/h up to 205 miles (330km) from it’s center – which means the entire Dominican Republic is currently experiencing these Tropical Storm Force winds (I will concur with this – it is very windy outside!)
  • The cloud mass associated with Hurricane Irene is currently covering much of the island of Hispaniola (the Dominican Republic and Haiti) and is producing heavy rains and strong gusts of wind
  • The projected path of Hurricane Irene now predicts that the hurricane will not hit Florida but will curve up along the coast of Florida and may make landfall in Southern or Northern Carolina – as a category 3 hurricane

Hurricane Irene is currently North of the Dominican Republic and is headed towards the USA

  • It will continue to rain heavily all day
  • There will be strong gusts of wind, potentially up to 64mph (102km/h)
  • Hopefully the worst is over!!
  • In summary: it is NOT going to be a nice day at all! If you are in Casa de Campo, click here for my ‘Top 10 things to do in Casa de Campo on a rainy day!’
UPDATE: The Chavón River has flooded at the ‘represa’ on the La Romana -Higuey road and is preventing travel from Casa de Campo / La Romana to La Estancia/Bayaibe/Dominicus/Higuey

Current Weather Conditions in Casa de Campo La Romana
For those of you who are currently not in Casa de Campo and are maybe wondering if your house blew away, here’s a quick summary of what the weather is like:

  • very rainy
  • rather windy
  • as far as I know no houses have blown away
  • the sea is rather rough and brown, it’s definitely not a nice day for sailing
  • on Facebook I have heard of various reports of some Casa de Campo villas experiencing a leaking problem – although these mainly seem to be from older homes and apartments in Altos de Chavón.

It’s raining in Casa de Campo – photo taken on our drive to the office!
