When talking about Altos de Chavón it is impossible not to think of Margarito – the village’s longest enduring occupant, wandering it’s cobbled streets for more than 26 years! He has become an integral part of Altos de Chavón, a replica of a 16th century Mediterranean village and an ambassador of Dominican art and culture.

Margarito, the donkey came to Altos de Chavón in approximately 1987 as an attraction in the popular Mexican restaurant “El Sombrero”, located where is currently the Altos de Chavon Art Studios by Emilio Robba. In those days, Margarito wore a poncho with typical Mexican colors (blue, green and red) with a hat and cane visitors to the restaurant would pose for photos next to him.

After the restaurant closed, Margarito continued his “work” around Altos de Chavón –  although nowadays he likes to wear a straw hat adorned with flowers.

His docile and affectionate nature has endeared him to many a tourist and of course to all Casa de Campo villa owners and residents – at sometime everyone has had their photo taken with him – and many have even taken him for a ride! There is no doubt that photos of Margarito have travelled the world!

Margarito is looked after by Mr.Pedro Rafael Guerrero and Mr.Felix Lopez, who take it in turns to be with him – normally outside of the Altos de Chavon Church or next to Fuente de Pescado, from 8:00 am until approximately 6:00 pm. The photos are free – so don’t be shy!

A curious fact about Margarito is that he loves everything sweet! He especially loves apples and bananas, and from time to time, even enjoys a few sips of beer. Can you believe it? Come one day with a bottle of beer in your hands, and Margaritos stomping feet and eagerness to nab your beer will make his preference quiet unmissable!
