Collares Rojos

Look into his eyes. Like many others, this doggy was found wandering around the streets without food, without a home, without love… For some people, these street dogs might have already become just another element typical sight on the streets of the Dominican Republic, while for members of the animal protection foundation “Collares Rojos” (Red Collars), as many other animal lovers, these are creatures that need to be taken care of NOW – and what better way to do so by supporting the sterilization campaign this weekend from the 21st to the 22nd July!!

Yanela Hoyo, along with a team of veterinaries and volunteers of the area, who comprise Collares Rojos has a primary focus of sterilizing animals during sterilization campaigns, with the aim of reducing the overpopulation of animals on the streets – and the next campaign is taking place this Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd of July in Bayahibe and Benerito!

One important fact is that just a small group of dogs can produce more than 5,000 puppies withing a period of 5 YEARS! And of course, unfortunately, many of these animals do not survive the terrible living conditions, which face them on the streets everyday.

However, in order to do successfully carry out these sterilization campaigns, the foundation needs financial and human resources.

Thanks to the generous donations from the foundations many followers on Facebook, from supporters people living locally as well as abroad, to date, more than 2,000 dogs and cats have been sterilized and vaccinated against rabies and 300 have been placed for adoption with great success in the La Romana-Bayhibe area – but unfortunately, there is still much more to do and in order to accomplish this mission, Collares Rojos needs your help!

“Our job would be much easier and more effective if we could get help from tourism companies in order to develop our project of controlling the overpopulation of animals in the streets… unfortunately we are limited by the lack of resources.

Sterilizing great numbers of dogs and cats is not only good for the animals, but also for society, especially in local tourist areas such as Bayahibe, where we have our headquarters. We need to focus on educating the population in one way or another, to change the mentality towards respect for life itself – for fellow humans and animals”.

– Yanela Hoyo, President of Collares Rojos.

What are we waiting for? Join Collares Rojos on this Sterilization Campaign this weekend and lets all be part of the solution! Here are the details:

About “Collares Rojos”… Now in La Romana??

With the purpose of joining forces to form a more effective task force to protect animals living on the streets, the Collares Rojos charity was founded in September of 2010, and since then has rescued and sheltered many dogs and cats which once lived on the streets of Bayahibe, Benerito, Higüey and Bavaro Punta Cana – who have now been put up for adoption through their Facebook Page.

Overpopulation has caused animals to suffer the dangers of living on the streets, a problem which affects many cities and towns of the Dominican Republic, one of them being La Romana.

For this reason, Collares Rojos appeals to the support of companies and individuals living in La Romana, who are willing to be part of the change, improving these animals’ living conditions in La Romana.
