“For me, Chavón has been the best experience that I’ve had so far and I wouldn’t change that for anything.” Scarlette Hernández told Casa de Campo Living.
The prestigious Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design, which has been graduating students since 1983, has become the home of many Dominican and foreign artists and designers now widely recognized for their works in the fashion industry, graphic design and the fine arts.
There is no doubt that the School knows how to prepare their students for their future careers in their chosen art area. Here we introduce you to another “Chavonera”, Scarlette Hernández, a first year student studying Fashion Design.
Scarlett from La Romana previously studied at the “Casa de La Cultura” in the town center, where she learned to improve her sketching, and from where she got a recommendation letter, that led to her acceptance at the school.
Now nearing the end of her first year studying Fashion Design, she points out that the school has adopted a great teaching methodology; demanding creativity, individuality and excellence.
“Magnificent, cooperation and self-improvement”were the words she used to describe the school. A big fan of designer Julio Marcano, a former student and current teacher at the school, Scarlett confesses that she strives to reach the same level of elegance and creativity.
We asked Scarlette Hernandez a few questions about her experience and opinion about the school.
@cdcliving: What inspires you?
The desire of self-improvement is what inspires me, to reach that level of greatness and to become a fine artist in my area.
@cdcliving: Who is your role model?
Julio Marcano, he is a current fashion design teacher in year 2 at the School of Design, he is also a graduate of the School. I love his work and would definitely like to reach the level of elegance and creativity that he portrays in each of his pieces.
@cdcliving: What are the teachers like at the Altos de Chavon School of Design?
Each of them have their own style and way of teaching, some of them allow music and there are others that don’t want music at all. They explain what we are doing and we start to work right away. We get 3 to 4 hours of practice, they start walking around looking at every student’s work and give them advice if they need to improve or if they are doing a good job.
